yep, that’s the old saying.  and with the help of TRU materials, we were able to GO BIG at our homes and at mission sites all across Kansas City last summer. GO BIG was a bold  VBS (vacation bible school experience that was held in backyards, basements, group homes, homeless shelters, and inner city parks.)

GO BIG inspired our church family to take the BIG GOD STORY and share it with their friends, neighbors, and our greater community.  we were seriously living out the GC2 (anglican style for great commandment and great commission)

Great Commandment

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”  matthew 22:37-39

Great Commission

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  matthew 28:19-20

meet my Jesus family

this special group of GO BIG peeps who would become known to the kids they visited at a local group home as, “Jesus friends”.  each of them brought the story of God’s redemptive plan week after week to the kids at the home, but more than that they gave hope through relationships.  one of the children they visited would later say, “you are the only people who come to visit that aren’t paid to be here.”  wow!  what a powerful testimony of the great commandment to love.  and that child recognized it as pure love and truth.

the kids and the leaders would share the big God story together, laugh together,  create together, worship together,  and pray together each wednesday throughout the month of june.  and in that time God would work the miracle of lasting relationships of  “true” family.  the kind of family only God could make through the love of Jesus.  a family that loved beyond behavior.  loved beyond words.  loved beyond the giving of things.  loved with the greatest gift, the love of Jesus.

since last summer one of our new young family members has  moved on to a new home.  when visited by his GO BIG friends he ran upstairs and retrieved the picture above saying, “i’m beginning to forget the name of my Jesus family.  will you tell them to me again?”

this young child’s words are just the encouragement we need to GO BIG again this summer.  more than any VBS before GO BIG has allowed us to share the BIG GOD STORY allowing it to make the lasting impression through a bunch of rag tag leaders.  leaders who felt equipped through the Holy Spirit.  leaders who felt supported by the church.  leaders who felt inspired by the BIG GOD STORY they were living into.

we love sharing the TRU message with GO BIG.  you can too.  visit www.tru.davidccook.com.  stay tuned as i share more about how GO BIG changed our lives, our neighbors lives, and our city.
