dreams too big
“Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”
His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.” Genesis 37:6-11
i’m pretty sure i am from the bloodline of joseph. for when i dream of more with God, those around me shake their heads and cast me and my wild dreams aside, like joseph’s brothers and father. but the dream isn’t from the dreamer. it’s from the Maker of all things in the world. and what the Maker dreams is worth pursuing.
my friend Michelle Anthony, author of Dreaming of More, asked the question last year, “Do you want God to dream of more for your ministry?” yes, yes, yes! for my dreams would lack in comparison. my dreams would be enough for only what i could handle. my dreams would be faded by thoughts of it might not work. my dreams would be dependent on me.
the Maker’s dreams though are boundless and for all. the Maker’s dreams are vibrant and rich in more than color, but in the story line he has been building for eternity. the Maker’s dreams are full people who bring gifts that sparkle and shine.
the Maker in his richness plants his dreams. and we who are willing are given a chance to ”be still and know He is God.” then respond saying, “send me, send me Lord to be a part of this dream.”
“i dreamed. and in this dream i saw myself outside the comfortable walls of my church. i was surrounded by faces, familiar from my neighborhood. these faces were radiant with anticipation. their words filled with questions of curiosity. and on all present the spirit was poured out. then true joy, freedom, and happiness were given by the maker.”
and those around me who heard my dream scoffed. they questioned how such a thing could be done. they wondered about my agenda. but the Lord in his goodness brought His dream into neighborhoods, backyards, parks, community centers, homeless shelters, and orphanages through willing hands and His dream was called, “GO BIG!”

My dear friend, you dream because you recognize the voice of your Maker. Never be ashamed of the dreams He has given you. Move forward with confidence because those dreams are just the beginning of His bigger plans for all of His people. Keep listening, keep acting, keep living out your calling with reckless abandon. Ignore the scoffs and keep on. I will keep cheering for you! You are not alone.
thank you becca! the risk for him is always worth it.
Exactly what Becca said. A GO BIG ditto from me as well. As a military general once said “Illegitimi non carborundum.” You’ll have to google that.
i love that i have a fan club of dreamers.
